The Meaning and Importance of Colour

The Meaning and Importance of Colour

Many of you may wonder why we are learning about colour. After all colour is colour what it there to know about it? But can you imagine a world without colour. If everything was black and white or perhaps like those early sepia photographs, or even worse grey, no variety, just dull shades of grey?

The Importance of Colour

Colour brings joy and vibrancy into our lives. Different colours make us feel differently. We all have favourite colours which make us feel good. We all have colours we dislike which make us feel down. Think of your favourite place in nature and the variety and shades of colours in that image, and then imagine what it would be like with no colour. Our lives are so much richer because we see in colour and why so many old classic black and white films have been technologically enhanced with colour.

Colour is also important in developing both your healing and your psychic and interpretive abilities. Colour plays a big part in reading cards as well as clairvoyance and healing. When reading we connect to peoples’ auras, (whether we can see them or not) where all our experience from this and past lives is stored. The Aura is part of the bodies energy system and for a more detailed look at the aura see my other in-depth articles on Auras or my Book In-Focus Auras.

Colours are often difficult to describe. This is why we often use references to the physical and natural world to communicate what a colour looks like because this acts as a point of common experience. Some common examples are grass green, forest green, blood red, battleship grey, sky blue, sunflower yellow and so on.

In addition to the shared meanings of colours, you will have personal associations with each shade of colour depending upon your life experiences. After all we all have our favourite colours and those we dislike. All interpretation of colour must take your experience into consideration and as well as your likes and dislikes and what those colours invoke in you.

As in most things different cultures often have different meanings for colours as well. For example in Europe it is common to wear black as a colour of mourning, in India white is the colour of mourning. In Europe a bride wears white in India they wear red. Different colours have different meanings in different cultures so it is extremely important to know what a particular colour means to you.

Colour Meanings

colour wheel 1734867 1920This is a big subject and you may feel it is hard to get to grips with. However, due to all your daily experience in your outer and your inner life you probably already know a lot more about it than you realise.
There are many sayings in our language referring to states of consciousness and colour. You may never have given thought to the origin of these sayings. They relate to a specific color generated by the state of consciousness described, within the astral field of the individual.

Some examples of these are:

He is “yellow” (cowardly)!

She was red with rage.

He is in a brown study.

She was green with envy.

I am feeling blue.

I am in the pink of health.

That’s peachy!

Each of these sayings for each of us will conjure up a slightly different shade of colour.

Shades of Color are Shades of Meaning

understanding colour introThe colors that cannot be reduced to any other color (primary colors) are red, yellow and blue. If you mix any two of these primary colors together you get the secondary colors; red plus yellow is orange, yellow plus blue is green and blue plus red is purple. The various shades are dependent upon the quantity in which each of the primary colours are mixed. These are known as the bright colours.

When a bright colour is mixed with either black or white this produces varying shades, each of which can have a different meaning. Mixing a bright colour with black suppresses the expression of the colour or makes it earthier. Mixing with white dilutes the power of expression making it softer and eventually more ethereal.

Colors in themselves are neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad’. They are expressions of energy, nothing more. It could be said that Bright’s mixed with black are ‘negative’ which may be construed as being ‘bad’. This is a misleading. After all black is created by mixing all the primary colours together. It can be necessary and appropriate to suppress or withhold energy to make it more focused within the earth plane. For example, if someone has trouble with expressing their sexuality, then dark reds are very good at helping them.

Conversely, colours mixed with white are not necessarily more spiritual just because they are more ethereal. Pure white is often seen as the most spiritual colour because it is all the colours mixed together. But a very pale colour can mean the expression may be very ‘wishy-washy’ or non-committal which may not be appropriate behavior.

Colour interpretation is a subtle skill and matures with practice. Learning about how you have internalized the meanings of colors and becoming more confident in your understanding is the first step being able to interpret them. Below are some generally accepted meanings focussed more upon what those shades of colour in a persons' aura may tell us.
