Father’s day has been celebrated in Catholic Europe as far back as the Middle Ages. in some places it was/is observed on 19th March which is the feast day of St Joseph, (father of Jesus) who is referred to as the Nutritor Domini (Nourisher of the Lord). In America, UK and many other countries in the world it is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June. Fathers Day is celebrated worldwide and recognises the contribution fathers and father figures make to the lives of children. 

This Coptic celebration may date back to the fifth century

In the Coptic Church, the celebration of fatherhood is also observed on St Joseph's Day, but the Copts observe this celebration on July 20.

This celebration was brought to the Americans by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in Latin America, Father's Day is still celebrated on 19 March.

One story of the beginnings of Father’s day is when Sonora Smart Dodd, after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon, suggested to her pastor that there should be a Father’s day as well. She wanted to honour her father a civil war veteran who raisied 6 children as a single parent. In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers and designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. But it was not until 1972 that Preident Richard Nixon passed it into law.
