International Day of Yoga

In 2014, the United Nations (UN) proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. But what is Yoga and how can it help you? Yoga is combines physical mental and spiritiual practices in a series of exercises which strengthen the mind, body and spirit. The word itself is derived from Sanscrit and means to join or unite.

Originating in India it has been growing in popularity since the 1960’s when I went to my first yoga class.

Different Types of Yoga

Nowadays there are a large number of different types of yoga just as kundalini yoga, tantric yoga, ashtanga yoga, power yoga, hatha yoga, to name but a few.  It is because of yoga's holistic approach to body and mind that the UN decided to dedicate June 21 to this ancient tradition.

"Yoga is a sport that can contribute to development and peace. Yoga can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress.” said Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-General.
