World Day Against Child Labour

World Day Against Child Labour takes place every 12th June. It’s aim is to raise awareness of the hundreds and millions of children world-wide who have lost their childhood to hard work every day. According to the International Labour Organisation (who instigated this day in 2002) children are often the first to suffer. Already, there are an estimated 152 million children in child labour, 72 million of which are in hazardous work.

This pandemic can push millions more vulnerable children into child labour.

In 2011, there were an estimated 215 million child laborers in the world - 115 million who were involved in hazardous work. These are mainly in developing countries but in many industrialised nations many children are forced to work. In USA children are employed in agriculture and also there have been and currently are, a number of incidents of western companies employing child labour in developing countries to save costs, who should be named and shamed.

Annual Events

Every year, there is a different focus and  events are held around the world on June 12 to call attention to the problem and to mark the World Day Against Child Labour.
