4th of October is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, (the Patron Saint of Animals, thus it is also World Animal Day. St Francis, founded the Franciscan order within the Catholic Church’s in Italy during the late 12th and 13th centuries. He is remembered for his willingness to minister to lepers and for his love for animals and nature. St Francis died at Portiuncula, Italy on October 4, 1226. Pope Gregory IX declared St Francis a saint in 1228 and laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, in Italy which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals.  It's celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.  Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare."  https://www.worldanimalday.org.uk   follow the link to see what is happening and how you can help. 

It is also appropriate that world animal day falls at the beginning of Vegetarian Awareness Month. We each have an individual responsibility to do what we can to protect those less fortunate than ourselves whether they be animal or human.
