Gobind Singh’s father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of the Sikh religion, was killed and is considered a martyr for freedom of religion, because he refused to convert to Islam. Gobind Singh himself wasinducted as the 10th Guru of the Sikh religion when he was just nine years old. He inspired an army of Sikhs to rise up and defy the Moghul rulers in the cause of religious and political freedom.
He lived a disciplined and religious life
Guru Gobind Singh was known to be a philosopher, poet, warrior, and most importantly, a spiritual master. On his birthday (which changes within the Gregorian calendar) those who honour religious freedom pray for prosperity and freedom for all.
They will also read or listen to his poetry. Many will march through India’s cities.
